Indexes are listings of resources by author, title, or subject. A good starting point for finding research materials.


ODP: The Open Directory Project. An open source, human edited directory of resources. Similar to Yahoo!s model of having a selection of general subject headings and subsets and web sites listed under each.
BUBL.A collection of resources organized by subject in the style of Yahoo! and ODP above. You'll find more of a UK/British focus here.
The Online Books Page currently lists over 35,000 books freely available around the web.
Online Newspapers is a collection of newspapers and magazines available online from around the world.
Infomine is an index of materials directed at university students, facultly, researchers and staff.
Google Scholar. A subset of the search engine you love to use, specifically concentrating on scholarly literature. Uses the same ranking system as the main search engine.
